Firm History

Spectrum Design, P.C., was born in 2000 with the merger of Echols-Sparger Architects and Spectrum Engineers, P.C., offering full-service architecture and engineering in Roanoke, Virginia. With a current staff of 30, we provide architectural design, master planning and land planning services, as well as comprehensive structural, civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering. Specializing in the design of educational facilities, historical preservation of older buildings, museums and performing arts, residential and senior living communities, municipal and government buildings, Spectrum Design provides creative architecture with smart engineering solutions.


Echols-Sparger was founded as J. L. Williams and Associates in 1946 in Marion, Virginia. Architect, Gordon Echols and engineer, Hay­wood Sparger soon joined Mr. Williams in the firm. The firm provided architectural services for area municipalities, businesses, school systems and colleges. Echols-Sparger’s portfolio includes over 200 school projects including some of the region’s most impressive educational facilities. The first school design was in Smyth County. The school was a prototypical high school built in Chilhowie and Rich Valley in the early 1950s.

In 1995 David Bandy joined Echols-Sparger as vice president, opening an office in Roanoke. Mr. Bandy was previously director of design for all architecture, interior design, and landscape design at a national architectural firm also located in Roanoke. Mr. Bandy’s design expertise includes educational facilities for schools and colleges and universities, senior living and residential communities, as well as historical preservation buildings of all types. His projects have received numerous design awards from the architectural community as well as the education and retirement professions.

Spectrum Engineers, P.C.

Spectrum Engineers, P.C., began in 1980 in Roanoke, Virginia, as John Garland Associates. Changing the firm’s name is 1985, the firm grew from a handful of staff members to over 30. Offering mechanical, electrical, struc­tural, and civil engineering, Spectrum Engineers’ portfolio included educational, retirement, religious, residential, industrial, municipal and government projects. In collaboration with the regions top architectural firms, Spectrum Engineers served clients throughout the region, the state and the country.

Spectrum Design, P.C.

The marriage of Spectrum Engineers and Echols-Sparger occurred in 2000. After teaming on numerous successful projects, the leaders at the two firms decided to join forces to offer clients a comprehensive approach to their design needs. Spectrum Design is located in downtown Roanoke, Virginia. With room to grow the firm continues to recruit qualified design professionals in the fields of architecture and engineering.
