Effinger Elementary School

Virginia School Boards Association, Best Renovation/Addition of an Elementary School, 2006
Rockbridge County Public Schools
Lexington, Virginia

The existing Effinger Elementary School is a two-story elementary school with a gymnasium/cafetorium attached to the second level. With an enrollment of 150 students and capacity for 125, preschool through fifth grade, the school did not offer adequate resource, classroom and support areas for its staff or students. To provide more classroom space, mobile classrooms were being used by the school. Spectrum Design directed the architectural and engineering renovation/redesign of the entire school. Special coordination of the phasing of the construction was necessary since the school was operational throughout the construction process. The redesign created a new front entrance to the school with parent and bus drop-off areas. An elevator was added to address ADA issues and ease access between the two levels. The latest in technology and data access is available throughout the school.

At the new front entrance a new administrative area was created from an old maintenance area. Administrators and teachers now enjoy a new workroom, storage areas, entrance lobby, offices, and staff toilets. The old administrative area was converted to the new media center with the latest technology and the existing library was renovated into a classroom. At total of three new classrooms were added in the expansion. The existing gymnasium/cafetorium was completely renovated. The entire school is air-conditioned and uses a geothermal heating system to save utility costs for the County.
