Hungry Mother State Park Restaurant Addition/Renovation
Department of Conversation & RecreationSmyth County, Virginia
Built during the Great Depression by the Civilian Conservation Corps, Hungry Mother State Park has a rustic ambiance reminiscent of the turn of the century mountain retreats throughout the Appalachians.
The challenge of this project was to triple the size of the restaurant without diminishing the importance of the remaining dining room and screened porch. Through careful massing and sensitivity to building materials, the total project met the challenge well. Using stone, heavy timber and rough sawn siding, the addition provided two new dining rooms and a new kitchen in the vernacular of the original building.
