Roanoke Regional Airport Aircraft Rescue & Fire Fighting Facility

Working as a consultant to a nationally recognized airport designer, Spectrum Design provided all engineering, interior design and local support for the design and construction of a 16,648 square foot Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting Facility for the Roanoke Regional Airport. The facility consists of a 7,449 square foot, four-bay engine and recovery vehicle structure with drive through ability. Attached is a single-story 7,676 square foot administration and living quarters masonry structure complete with exercise room, conference and training space, offices, a kitchen, and sleeping quarters for twelve firemen. Space within the garage bay was captured for a 1,523 square foot mezzanine to house mechanical equipment and storage. Special building features include a pre-engineered metal structure for the high-bay space, a monorail and hoist with 1,000 lb capacity, and a building automation system (BAS) with features that control alarms, lights and kitchen equipment including an automatic gas range shut-off during alarm calls.

The site selected for this facility provides a rapid response time of 3 minutes or less to the most extreme points on the runways. Providing a building pad for this location required a substantial earthwork operation to fill over 40 vertical feet and consisted of nearly 90,000 cubic yards of material. Special settlement monitoring systems were specified during earthwork operations to verify the compactive efforts and ensured the massive fill operation would not settle. Utility extensions for power, water, fire service, gas, and sanitary service were provided to support the project’s remote location along with communication systems to tie the facility to the airport terminal and tower.

Spectrum staff working on the project were screened and badged for security and trained for escorting and working within the AOA (Aircraft Operations Area). Construction Administration services for all the engineering disciplines including civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection, as well as interior design were provided during the 14-month construction schedule.
