Rising student enrollment at Breckinridge Middle School created the need for additional classroom space. Following a planning study for Roanoke City Public Schools, Spectrum Design determined that a two-story infill addition could be constructed within an existing courtyard. This new wing provides seven classrooms directly connected to the existing instructional areas while preserving much of the site’s open space.
A single-story addition at the northwest corner forms a new music wing, while at the heart of the two-story addition, a light-filled atrium serves as both a circulation hub and a social space, linking the new construction to the school’s main corridors at both ends allowing for easy access and supervision. Flexible breakout spaces adjacent to the classrooms offer areas for small groups, student project teams, or individual instruction.
