Transform an existing, underutilized common space into a vibrant and inviting gathering area for students.

Virginia Tech: Payne Hall

In support of Virginia Tech’s emphasis on creating Living Learning Communities, the common areas of Payne Hall were reimagined with a strong focus on wellness. At the center of the renovated lounge is a demonstration kitchen featuring a large cooking island, where chefs host interactive sessions to teach culinary techniques and encourage healthy eating habits.

To enhance daylight and visual connectivity, existing masonry walls to an adjacent classroom were replaced with a glass storefront system. This transformed space now serves as a flexible classroom and meeting area, accommodating a range of activities—from group study sessions to regular yoga classes. The interior design blends durability with warmth, using inviting, natural finishes that integrate seamlessly with the existing materials in adjacent areas.
